Blair Castle and Gardens
After you’ve been to the Country Life Museum, make sure that you don’t leave Blair Atholl without visiting the majestic Blair Castle and its beautiful surrounding gardens.
Well over 700 years old, the story of this magnificent castle takes visitors on a fascinating journey from an early visit by Mary Queen of Scots to the days of Queen Victoria. En route, you’ll learn of Blair Castle’s role in the Civil War, the Jacobite Rising of the mid-1700s, and the tragic ending of the Battle of Culloden.
While you’re there, take some time out and explore the castle’s beautifully preserved gardens and grounds, ideal as much for a relaxing stroll as they are for letting the kids blow off some steam during your family holiday in Scotland.
Clans of Rannoch Trail, Loch Rannoch
Key to the area’s heritage are the clans who lived in this wild and inhospitable area in days gone by. Explore their stories of heroic deeds and dark history by following the trail around Loch Rannoch. The trail is marked by a series of stone markers, relating fascinating stories of the seven main clans and their turbulent heritage.

Highland Folk Museum
Further afield, you’ll find the unique Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, which offers a rare glimpse into authentic Scottish heritage from the early 1700s right through to the 1960s. Britain’s first open air museum, it is set in a mile-long site allowing you to follow history’s progress from the 1700’s Township featuring 6 houses at one end, to the 1930s working croft at the other. The site displays over 30 historical buildings, furnished appropriate to the time period they depict.
It is also home to ‘Am Fasgadh’ housing over 10,000 artifacts, each one with its own story to tell.
A must-visit for child-friendly holidays in Scotland, the Highland Folk Museum is open from March to October and is free to visit, approximately a 55 minute from the Dunalastair Hotel Suites via the A9.

Queen’s View Visitor Centre
You’ll find the Queen’s View Visitor Centre nestled on the banks of the River Tummel, which runs all the way from our boutique hotel in Kinloch Rannoch through to nearby Pitlochry.
If for nothing else, Queens View is worth the drive to Pitlochry for its remarkable, panoramic view across the Scottish Highlands, taking in nearby Tay Forest Park, and, on a clear day, stretching as far as the West Coast of Scotland.
When you’re done gazing at this simply incredible view, head inside the visitor’ centre for their captivating displays and exhibitions recounting life in the area from years gone by to the present day.
