The 2-day itinerary for the Mull and Iona food trail
The delightful islands of Mull and Iona are only a short 45-minute ferry ride away from the mainland and around two and half hours drive from Kinloch Rannoch. The ferry leaves from the quaint coastal village of Oban and arrives in Craignure on Mull. The journey is an adventure in its own right, with crystal clear seas a welcoming sight as the ferry enters the bay.
Intrepid travellers from around the world visit the Islands of Mull and Iona every year for a good reason. The locations are a photographer, nature and food lover’s delight! Plus, there’s lots to do in Mull and Iona.
Day 1 – Morning
You arrive in Mull on the 8.45 ferry giving you lots of time to explore the island’s northern loop. In addition, there are lots of locations to visit en route!
Salen Shipwrecks is probably the most photographed shipwrecks. Many artists travelled to Mull to put brush to canvas to depict the now-famous fishing boats. The location is peaceful, with nature doing its best to create the perfect canvas.
Eas Fors Waterfall – these spectacular falls have attracted visitors, and for a good reason, as the last drop crashes 100ft into the ocean below. You can park nearby, but to view the waterfalls in all their glory, it’s worth hiking the 20 minutes back toward the Ulva ferry. This takes you to the beach below the waterfalls.
Calgary Bay – people marvel at the beautiful beaches found in Scotland, and Calgary Bay is one of them. It’s on the top 10 list of best beaches for many reasons. Taking a stroll along the beach on a warm summer’s day doesn’t get much better than this. It’s one of the great things to do in Mull.
Tobermory – The delightful and colourful village of Tobermory is the perfect place to stop for a spot of lunch. Brightly painted seafront houses adorn the harbour, and it’s where Balamory, the children’s TV series, was filmed back in the early 2000s. Taste the delights of freshly caught fish, shellfish, smoked salmon, and trout with other locally produced delights.
Day 1 – Afternoon
Eagle Spotting – spend an afternoon travelling south towards the ferry port. There are lots to see along the way. Why not enjoy a guided walk along the gorgeous Craignure beach where sea eagles can be seen. The guides know the area well and will do their best to ensure you get to see some of these magnificent birds and maybe some sea otters too!
Duart Castle – one of the most famous castles on Mull, Duart was chosen as the location for many films in the past. Enjoy the 13-course tasting menu at the castle or savour street food delights, where you’ll find local producers serving culinary specialities. Visiting the castle has to be high on the list of things to do in Mull and Iona!
Day 1 – Evening
Evenings on Mull are exceptional, and there’s a wonderful choice of places to stay overnight. Choosing to stay close to Craignure means it’s just a short distance to the port the following morning to catch the ferry to Iona.
Day 2 – Morning
Fionnphort – take a relaxing drive to Fionnphort, located on the far southwest coast of Mull. You’ll discover lots of delightful bays en route. Plus, there’s a choice of wonderful coastal walks worth discovering before you jump on the ferry to Iona. No booking in advance is needed for this 10-minute trip.
Iona Abbey – the abbey was built by St Columba in Ad 563 and remains one of Scotland’s most religious sites. The historical background to the magnificent abbey tells the stories of religious struggles and Viking raids! This is one thing to do in Mull and Iona that’s not to be missed!
St. Columbas Bay – the bay is a profoundly spiritual location where St Columbas is said to have knelt in prayer surrounded by angels. Walk up the Hill of Angels and marvel at the stunning vistas out to sea.
Day 2 – Afternoon
Make your way back to the port by mid-afternoon to catch the ferry to Craignure after enjoying a meal at one of the two hotel restaurants. Then there’s the Heritage Centre Garden Café, which serves light snacks and delicious homemade soups. The last ferry back to the mainland leaves at 19.15 (most days) and 17.55 on Sundays. You need to book in advance when travelling by car!
